Vitamin C

Effervescent Y2K pop that balances high-energy dance beats with a deep, sentimental streak. The definitive soundtrack for saying goodbye and moving on.

Intro

Vitamin C captures the specific, shimmering anxiety of the turn of the millennium. Her sound is a bright, saturated blend of bubblegum pop, light reggae rhythms, and the polished sheen of late-90s dance music. It feels like a polaroid of a summer afternoon that is just starting to fade, mixing high-energy optimism with a sudden, sharp pang of nostalgia.

What sets her apart is the clever use of classical interpolations and a background in alternative rock that gives her pop songs a slightly sturdier skeleton than her contemporaries. While peers were leaning into pure club energy, she leaned into the 'moment' - capturing the collective breath held during life transitions. Her production often features scratchy turntable effects and clean, melodic synth lines.

Start with her self-titled debut album to hear the peak of the Y2K pop explosion. It is an essential time capsule of an era where pop was becoming increasingly digital but still held onto a sunny, organic warmth. It is music for big endings and even bigger beginnings.

Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick (born July 20, 1969), known professionally as Vitamin C, is an American record executive, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. She began her career as an Ivory soap baby and child actress, appearing in John Waters' film Hairspray (1988), and continued to appear in minor roles in films before launching a music career with the alternative rock band Eve's Plum in 1991. In 1999, under the stage name Vitamin C, Fitzpatrick embarked on a solo career in pop music, releasing her eponymous debut album Vitamin C (1999), which was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Singles from the record include "Graduation (Friends Forever)" and the Top 20 single "Smile" featuring Lady Saw. Her second album, More (2001) spawned the singles "As Long as You're Loving Me" and "The Itch". She appeared in the horror film Dracula 2000 (2000), and made cameo appearances in Get Over It (2001) and Scary Movie 2 (2001). She also appeared as a panelist on the spoof talent series The WB's Superstar USA in 2004. She was ranked No. 76 on the Maxim Hot 100 Women of 2001. In March 2012, Fitzpatrick was appointed as Vice President of Music at Nickelodeon. Since early 2019, Fitzpatrick has served as a music executive for Netflix.
