High-octane Brazilian power metal featuring soaring operatic vocals and neoclassical guitar duels. Epic, melodic, and relentlessly energetic.
Viper is a foundational pillar of the Brazilian heavy metal scene, formed in São Paulo in 1985. They are most historically significant for launching the career of legendary vocalist Andre Matos and for being among the first South American bands to successfully export a polished, melodic power metal sound to international markets, particularly Japan.
Their early style was heavily indebted to Iron Maiden, but by their sophomore effort, 'Theatre of Fate' (1989), they had integrated neoclassical elements and symphonic arrangements that predated the 1990s power metal boom. Following Matos's departure to form Angra, the band shifted toward a more aggressive, hard-rock influenced sound on 'Evolution' (1992) and 'Coma Rage' (1995), reflecting the changing global metal landscape. Despite several hiatuses and lineup changes, Viper remains a cult institution, representing the bridge between raw 80s speed metal and the sophisticated progressive-power metal hybrid that Brazil is now world-renowned for. Critical consensus views them as pioneers who proved that South American metal could achieve world-class production and technicality.
