Elastic, gravity-defying bass lines that treat the instrument like a drum kit and a piano at once. High-energy jazz fusion with a soulful, philosophical heart.
Victor Wooten's music is a masterclass in the intersection of technical impossibility and pure, unadulterated joy. While most bassists are content to provide the foundation, Wooten treats the four strings as a complete orchestra, utilizing a 'double-thumbing' technique that creates the illusion of multiple players at once. The sound is warm and elastic, vibrating with a kinetic energy that feels both deeply rooted in Earthy funk and untethered by traditional musical physics.
What truly distinguishes Wooten is his holistic approach to sound. He often weaves in field recordings of nature, philosophical spoken-word segments, and intricate polyrhythms that reflect his interests in tracking and martial arts. It is music that demands your attention not through volume, but through the sheer density of ideas and the infectious sense of discovery present in every solo. It feels less like a performance and more like a spiritual conversation between the player and the wood.
For the uninitiated, 'A Show of Hands' is the essential starting point. It is a stark, beautiful testament to what can be achieved with just a bass guitar and a microphone. From there, 'Palmystery' offers a more expansive, ensemble-driven look at his ability to lead a band through complex, multi-genre landscapes without ever losing the groove.
Victor Lemonte Wooten (born September 11, 1964) is an American bassist, songwriter, and record producer. He has been the bassist for Béla Fleck and the Flecktones since the group's formation in 1988 and a member of the band SMV with two other bassists, Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller. From 2017 to 2019, he recorded as the bassist for the metal band Nitro. He owns Vix Records, which releases his albums. He wrote the novel The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music. He later released the book's sequel, The Spirit of Music: The Lesson Continues, on February 2, 2021. Wooten is the recipient of five Grammy Awards. He won the Bass Player of the Year award from Bass Player magazine three times and is the first person to win the award more than once. In 2011, he was ranked No. 10 in the Top 10 Bassists of All Time by readers of Rolling Stone magazine. In 2018–2019, Wooten was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called focal dystonia in his hands and upper body, which had been limiting his ability to play in previous years, but has since abated somewhat.
