Warm analog synths and robotic rhythms that feel like a lonely walk through a neon-lit city. Melodic IDM for late-night reflection and quiet urban commutes.
Vector Lovers crafts a sound that feels like the emotional interior of a robot dreaming of the 1980s. It is deeply electronic, yet it possesses a human warmth that many of its IDM peers lack. The music is defined by lush, liquid synth pads and crisp, precise drum machine patterns that evoke a sense of high-tech nostalgia. It is the sound of a futuristic city seen through a soft-focus lens, where every beep and pulse carries a weight of quiet longing.
What sets Martin Wheeler apart is his ability to blend the clinical precision of Kraftwerk with the melodic vulnerability of Depeche Mode. While the rhythms are often complex and glitchy, they never overshadow the central, bittersweet melodies. There is a cinematic quality to the production, often feeling like a lost soundtrack to a cyberpunk film that focuses on the quiet moments between the action. It is music that occupies the space between the dancefloor and the bedroom, offering enough groove to move to but enough depth to reward focused, solitary listening.
Newcomers should start with the 2005 album Capsule for One. It perfectly encapsulates the Vector Lovers aesthetic: a blend of electro-funk, IDM, and ambient pop that feels both timeless and specifically rooted in the mid-2000s electronic renaissance. From there, explore Afterglow for a deeper dive into his more atmospheric and melodic tendencies. It is the ideal companion for anyone who finds beauty in the intersection of technology and emotion.
Vector Lovers is the moniker used by British electronic music producer Martin Wheeler. Wheeler, as described by Soma Records (his current label) is a "computer nerd" and "80s-obsessed knob-twiddler" and creates music which falls into the intelligent dance music (IDM) and electro genres. His music has been compared to and is influenced by such acts as Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode. As Vector Lovers, Wheeler has released several singles and EPs, as well as four albums. Early Vector Lovers' releases were through his own Iwari record label (one very early release was made as 'Balloon' - the name was changed to Vector Lovers when he discovered that there already was a band called Balloon). Music has also been released under the names Rosenbaum and Badly Born Droid. In 2006, Wheeler contributed production duties to Tracey Thorn's album Out of the Woods, released in March 2007.
