Crushing beatdown hardcore that collides with atmospheric metal. Heavy, rhythmic, and visceral music for when you need to turn frustration into pure kinetic energy.
Varials emerged from the Philadelphia hardcore scene in 2013, quickly distinguishing themselves through a sound that bridged the gap between traditional beatdown hardcore and modern metalcore. Their early EPs, 'Recollection' and 'Failure//Control', established a reputation for uncompromising heaviness and rhythmic complexity.
The band's signing to Fearless Records in 2017 marked a shift toward more expansive production, culminating in 'Pain Again' and the critically acclaimed 'In Darkness'. Their sound identity is characterized by 'downtempo' influences, featuring extremely slow, punishing breakdowns and a lyrical focus on internal struggle, addiction, and existential dread. Despite significant lineup changes, including the departure of founding vocalist Travis Tabron, the band has maintained its trajectory by leaning into a more diverse range of influences, including nu-metal and shoegaze. They are central figures in the 'heavy hardcore' movement, influencing a wave of bands that prioritize sonic weight and atmospheric tension over technical shredding.
