АукцЫон

Theatrical, chaotic, and deeply poetic avant-rock from Saint Petersburg. A wild fusion of jazz brass, post-punk energy, and absurdist Russian soul.

Intro

Auktyon sounds like a carnival troupe that got lost in a blizzard and decided to start a jazz-punk band. Their music is a dense, swirling vortex of sound where jagged electric guitars collide with a frantic, free-wheeling brass section. There is a specific kind of Russian 'toska' - a deep, existential yearning - that runs through their work, but it is often masked by a manic, celebratory energy that feels like a party at the end of the world.

What makes them truly distinctive is the interplay between Leonid Fyodorov’s raw, soulful vocals and the absurdist, theatrical presence of Oleg Garkusha. They don't just play songs; they build sonic structures out of futurist poetry and avant-garde jazz, creating a texture that is simultaneously gritty and sophisticated. The rhythm section often leans into off-kilter waltzes or tribal percussion, making the music feel ancient and futuristic at the same time.

Start with the album 'Ptitsa' for their most melodic and accessible work, or dive into 'Bodun' if you want to experience the full, unhinged power of their early 90s experimental peak. It is music for people who want their rock to have the complexity of jazz and the soul of a midnight fever dream.

Auktyon (Russian: АукцЫон, pronounced [ɐʊktsɨˈon]. Auktsyon) is a Russian alternative rock band from Saint Petersburg. The band was founded by Leonid Fyodorov at the Polytechnic Institute of Leningrad. Though they originally played post-punk and new wave, the group came to be influenced by European and Central Asian folk music, avant-garde jazz, the poetry of Russian futurist Velimir Khlebnikov, and aspects of Russian high culture and literature. Auktyon was particularly popular from 1987 through 1995, but became less active in the late 1990s when Fyodorov began to produce records for Leningrad. The group continues to play together and to release new albums. They toured the United States in 2006 in support of their first US release, the album Pioneer. The group returned to the US in 2008 when they released the album Girls Sing.
