Intro

Kuroyume is a seminal Japanese rock entity that fundamentally reshaped the Visual Kei landscape before transcending it. Formed in Nagoya in 1991, they were the architects of 'Nagoya kei,' a subgenre characterized by darker, more macabre aesthetics and a gloomier sonic palette compared to their Tokyo contemporaries.

The band's early era, featuring guitarist Shin, focused on gothic themes and intricate, atmospheric rock. Following Shin's departure in 1995, the band became a duo consisting of vocalist Kiyoharu and bassist Hitoki, a transition that coincided with a radical shift toward punk and alternative rock. Hitoki's role became central, often handling guitar duties and providing the band's signature melodic, high-gain bass lines. Their mid-to-late 90s output, particularly albums like 'Drug TReatment' and 'CORKSCREW,' influenced a generation of Japanese musicians by blending pop hooks with a nihilistic, aggressive punk ethos. Despite multiple breakups and hiatuses, their legacy as icons of rebellion and stylistic evolution remains unchallenged in the J-rock canon.
