Intro

Chang Chen-yue, or A-Yue, sounds like the transition from a rowdy night out to a quiet morning on the coast. His music oscillates between the high-energy, distorted grit of 90s alternative rock and the tender, stripped-back intimacy of an acoustic guitar. There is a persistent warmth in his production, often feeling like a well-worn cassette tape that has been played a thousand times during road trips.

What truly sets him apart is his 'slacker' persona, delivered through a distinctive, slightly detached vocal style that makes even his most heartbreaking ballads feel authentic rather than over-produced. He successfully bridges the gap between the rebellious energy of the Taipei underground and the melodic sensibilities of mainstream Mandopop, all while infusing his later work with the rhythmic heritage of his Amis indigenous roots.

Start with the 1998 classic 'Secret Base' to hear his rock foundations, then move to 'OK' for his more mature, reflective songwriting. If you want to hear his cultural impact on the hip-hop scene, his collaborations with MC HotDog are essential listening for understanding the evolution of Taiwanese urban music.

Ayal Komod (born 2 May 1974), better known by his stage name A-Yue or Chang Chen-yue (Chinese: 張震嶽; pinyin: Zhāng Zhènyùe; Wade–Giles: Chang Chen-yue; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tiuⁿ Chìn-ga̍k), is an aboriginal Taiwanese rock and Hip-Hop musician, songwriter, singer and guitarist, and the frontman of his band, Free Night, also known as Free9. He is most widely known for his 1998 hit song "Ai Wo Bie Zou" (Love me, don't go). His 2013 album I am Ayal Komod was awarded the Best Album Award during the 25th Golden Melody Awards. Chang is a Taiwanese aborigine of the Amis people.
