Founded in 1992 in Kostiantynivka, Ukraine, Нэнси (Nensi) became one of the most culturally significant pop acts in the post-Soviet space during the 1990s. Led by Anatoly Bondarenko, the group bridged the gap between the 'VIA' (vocal-instrumental ensemble) traditions of the late Soviet era and the emerging synth-driven pop of the new decade.
Their sound identity is inextricably linked to the 'chanson' genre, characterized by narrative-driven lyrics focusing on romance, loss, and urban life, but polished with a pop-rock production sheen. The band's 1992 debut album and its title track, 'Dym sigaret s mentolom,' became a massive cross-border success, cementing their status as masters of the sentimental ballad. Throughout the 2000s, the band maintained a loyal following through consistent touring and a prolific output of 'Grand Collection' style compilations. The tragic death of Sergey Bondarenko in 2018 marked a somber turning point in their later career.
