Intro

Li Zhi sounds like the weary voice of a city at 3 AM. His music is built on a foundation of sturdy acoustic guitar and a baritone that is intentionally unpolished, often cracking or straining to convey a sense of genuine, lived-in exhaustion. While he began in the lo-fi folk tradition, his later work expanded into lush, almost cinematic territory, incorporating full brass sections and orchestral swells that elevate his tales of urban drudgery into something grand and tragic.

What sets him apart is his uncompromising intellectualism and his deep connection to specific geography, particularly the city of Nanjing. He doesn't sing about abstract nature; he sings about specific streets, the smell of the air, and the crushing weight of social expectations. There is a persistent sense of 'the outsider' in his work, a cynical but deeply romantic perspective that refuses to look away from the more painful aspects of modern life.

New listeners should start with the album '1701' or 'F'. These records perfectly balance his earlier folk intimacy with the more ambitious, full-band arrangements that defined his peak years. It is music for people who prefer the truth to a pretty lie, and for those who find beauty in the gray, rainy corners of the world.

Li Zhi (born November 13, 1978) is a mainland Chinese music artist who was banned from People's Republic of China in April 2019. According to the China Daily newspaper published in 2015, Li was a music artist who sold out his concert tickets quickly. His 2014 New Year concert I/O sold out all 3,600 tickets in 13 minutes. Since April 12, 2019, Li paused activities, his music was removed from all music streaming platform in China mainland, and Li's Weibo account was cancelled. Li's band disbanded due to his unavailability to perform in a long time.
