High-gloss, hyper-kinetic electropop with a razor-sharp digital edge. Shimmering synths and robotic grooves for neon-lit nights and high-focus energy.
Yasutaka Nakata creates music that sounds like a high-definition future. It is characterized by an obsessive attention to digital detail, where every snare hit and synth swell is polished to a mirror finish. The energy is relentless but controlled, moving between the sugary heights of idol pop and the aggressive, side-chained thumping of electro house. It feels like stepping into a perfectly rendered video game world where everything is vibrant, fast, and slightly surreal.
What truly sets him apart is his signature 'cut-and-paste' production style. He treats the human voice as just another synthesizer, chopping syllables into rhythmic patterns and layering them over complex, shifting chord progressions. There is a specific tension in his work between the mechanical precision of his DAW and a deep, melodic sensibility that draws from the Shibuya-kei tradition of the late 90s. It is music that celebrates artificiality as an art form.
For those new to his solo work, Digital Native provides the best overview of his modern club-focused sound. If you prefer his more cinematic and tense side, his soundtracks for the Liar Game series offer a masterclass in psychological electronic tension. It is the ideal starting point for anyone who wants to hear the architect behind the last two decades of Japanese pop innovation.

He ran his own label, Contemode, in association with Yamaha. After Towa Tei, he was the second Japanese artist to officially remix Kylie Minogue, contributing a version of her single "Get Outta My Way". He also formed Coltemonikha with singer, model, and fashion designer Kate Sakai. In July 2012, he won the "Creator" award for the "Change Maker of the Year 2012" event. The Japan Record Awards also awarded Nakata the Best Music Arrangement Award twice, the first for the songs "Tsukema Tsukeru" by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and "Spice" by Perfume in 2012, and the second one for Kyary's songs "Harajuku Iyahoi" and "Easta" in 2017. Nakata released his first solo album, Digital Native, on February 7, 2018. As of September 25, 2019, Nakata has put out a total of ten number-one albums, most as part of his production with Perfume (six albums and two compilations) and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (two albums).
