Dark, theatrical folk that replaces drums with the rhythmic wheeze of an accordion. Intense Russian noir for cold nights and deep introspection.
Affinage sounds like the soul of Saint Petersburg on a wet Tuesday night. It is music built from the bones of acoustic instruments, where the accordion and trombone provide a rhythmic pulse that feels more human and desperate than any drum kit. The sound is thick with atmosphere, blending the grit of 90s grunge with the sophisticated gloom of European cabaret and Russian chanson.
What truly sets them apart is the vocal performance of Mikhail Kalinin. He moves from a vulnerable, whispered croon to a frantic, theatrical roar with startling speed. The lack of a traditional rhythm section creates a unique tension, forcing the listener to focus on the interplay between the brass and the strings. It is raw, unpolished, and deeply cinematic, often feeling like a lost soundtrack to a Balabanov film.
Start with the album 'Mera' or the track 'Nravitsya' to understand their range. It is the perfect entry point for those who want music that feels like a heavy coat on a cold day, providing a strange kind of comfort through its unflinching embrace of darkness and existential weight.
Affinage (Russian: Аффинаж) is a Russian band founded in 2012 by songwriter and lead singer Mikhail Em Kalinin (Russian: Михаил "Эм" Калинин) and bass player Sergei Sergeich Shiliaev (Russian: Сергей "Сергеич" Шиляев) in the city of Saint Petersburg. The band plays songs in its own style of noir-chanson and takes its name from the process of purifying an impure metal (French: affinage). Since its formation, the group released five studio albums, seven EPs, thirteen singles and one compilation. Affinage toured across Russia and Belarus, taken part in the popular Russian festivals (such as Nashestvie) and has songs on major music hit charts, and played on radio stations (e.g. Nashe Radio), without producers, labels or large sponsors.
