High-octane Russian punk that pairs melodic pop-punk hooks with uncompromising, razor-sharp political protest. Intense, urgent, and deeply defiant music for the front lines.
This is punk rock stripped of its irony and replaced with a terrifying, beautiful sincerity. The sound is a wall of distorted guitars and breakneck drumming that feels like it's trying to outrun the very authorities it critiques. It's loud, fast, and relentlessly melodic, drawing from the tradition of 90s skate punk but injecting it with a heavy dose of Eastern European melancholy and grit.
What truly sets them apart is the juxtaposition of their 'straight edge' lifestyle with their aggressive sound. There is no chemical haze here, only the raw, sober adrenaline of people who have something urgent to say. The vocals often sound like they are on the verge of breaking, pushing against the limits of the singer's lungs to deliver lyrics that function as both poetry and protest.
Start with the album 'It Shall Pass' (Это пройдёт). It captures the band at their most refined and potent, offering a masterclass in how to turn political despair into a communal, anthemic experience that feels like a light in a very dark room.
Pornofilmy (Russian: Порнофи́льмы, lit. 'porn movies') is a Russian punk band from the city of Dubna and one of the most popular existing rock bands in Russia. It was founded in 2008. The members of the band include lead vocalist and lyricist Vladimir Kotlyarov, solo guitarist Igor Rybin, rhythm guitarist and band manager Alexander Rusakov, drummer Kirill Muravyev, and bassist Alexander Agafonov. The band stands out from other Russian punk-rock bands for their highly politicized lyrics and promotion of healthy living. All members of the band are vegetarians, and do not drink alcohol, use drugs, or smoke. The band initially gained popularity in Dubna, but after the release of their fourth album and the cancellation of a number of concerts by local authorities, they reached national fame and became one of the leading performers of rock music in Russia. Currently, Pornofilmy has 13 releases, including 8 studio albums and 5 mini-albums. Their latest studio album, "It Shall Pass", was released in January 2020. In the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the group relocated to Georgia.
