己龍

Aggressive metal fused with traditional Japanese horror. Ornate, theatrical, and relentlessly intense, it sounds like a haunted shrine collapsing in slow motion.

Intro

Kiryu is a sensory overload of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern metal aggression. Their sound is defined by the 'Wagakki' influence, where the scales and melodic structures of ancient Japan are weaponized through distorted guitars and hyper-speed drumming. It is music that feels both ancient and dangerously current, wrapped in a layer of theatrical terror.

What truly sets them apart is the 'painful nostalgia' they cultivate. Vocalist Mahiro Kurosaki employs a distinctive, nasal vibrato and dramatic delivery that mirrors Kabuki theater, while the dual guitar work weaves intricate, folk-inspired leads into crushing rhythmic foundations. The production is dense and maximalist, leaving no space unfilled, creating an atmosphere of beautiful claustrophobia.

Start with the album 'Shuka Ensen' to hear the band at their most balanced and potent. It perfectly captures their ability to transition from haunting, traditional melodies to explosive metal outbursts, serving as the definitive gateway into their world of 'Japanese terror.'

Kiryū (己龍) is a Japanese visual kei metal band founded in 2007 with the concept of "Japanese terror" and "painful nostalgia". Formed by vocalist Mahiro Kurosaki, guitarists Takemasa Kujō and Mitsuki Sakai, bassist Hiyori Isshiki and drummer Junji Tokai, each member is represented by a color. They have been part of the independent label B.P Records since 2009. Many of their releases have reached high positions on the Oricon Indies chart, and they have also performed at venues such as Nippon Budokan and Tokyo Dome City Hall. They were ranked thirteenth in JRock News top 15 visual kei bands and artists of 2020 and received an honorable mention in the Most Influential Jrockers of 2017. Takemasa Kujō stopped featuring in the band's public appearances at the end of 2021 and one year later Mahiro Kurosaki also paused his activities. Consequently, the band entered an indefinite hiatus in the end of 2023.
