カヒミ・カリィ

Whisper-thin vocals floating over a collage of French pop, bossa nova, and electronic glitch. Sophisticated, multilingual daydreaming for rainy afternoons.

Intro

Kahimi Karie sounds like a secret shared in a crowded room. Her music is defined by a vocal delivery so quiet it demands your full attention, a breathy 'whisper-pop' style that feels both intimate and slightly detached. It is a sonic world where the elegance of 1960s French yé-yé girls meets the restless, sample-heavy experimentation of 1990s Tokyo. Every track feels like a carefully curated vignette, blending acoustic warmth with digital precision.

What makes her truly distinctive is the way she treats her voice as a textural element rather than a powerhouse instrument. By collaborating with avant-pop architects like Momus and Cornelius, she crafted a sound that is intellectually playful and aesthetically impeccable. She moves effortlessly between Japanese, French, and English, creating a globalized, cosmopolitan pop that feels like it belongs to a dream version of Paris or Rome as seen through a Japanese lens.

Start with the 'Girly' EP or 'Good Morning World' to experience the height of her Shibuya-kei era. These records perfectly capture the blend of kitsch, sophistication, and childlike wonder that made her a cult icon. It is the ideal soundtrack for moments of quiet introspection or for adding a layer of cinematic charm to a mundane day.

Mari Hiki (比企マリ, Hiki Mari; born March 15, 1968), better known by her stage name Kahimi Karie (カヒミ・カリィ, Kahimi Karii), is a Japanese retired singer, songwriter and photographer. Her music is closely associated with the Shibuya-kei aesthetic. Karie sings in English, French and Japanese, among other languages. Karie began her music career in 1990 at the encouragement of fellow Shibuya-kei artist Cornelius, whom she collaborated with on many of her early works, and whose trendy Trattoria label released many of her EPs in the mid-1990s. Karie later moved to Paris and released several studio albums on the Crue-L and Polydor labels. She now lives in New York City.
