Unextraordinary Gentlemen (UXG) is a pivotal project within the steampunk subculture, formed in Los Angeles in 2005. While often categorized by their aesthetic, their sound is a sophisticated synthesis of darkwave, industrial, and synth-pop, heavily influenced by the 1980s UK post-punk scene.
The core duo of Richard Pilawski and Eric Schreeck, later joined by violinist Jennifer Pomerantz, created a sound identity defined by baritone vocals and 'mechanical' rhythmic structures that evoke Victorian machinery. Their career arc is marked by a transition from the experimental storytelling of their debut to the more polished, expansive production found on 'Stars Pulled Down'.
