Turnover represents one of the most successful stylistic pivots in modern independent rock. Formed in Virginia Beach in 2009, they initially emerged from the pop punk and emo scene, closely associated with the Run for Cover Records roster and producer Will Yip.
Their debut, Magnolia (2013), showcased a gritty, alternative rock sound, but it was 2015's Peripheral Vision that secured their legacy. This album saw the band abandon punk aggression for a lush, reverb-heavy dream pop aesthetic influenced by The Smiths and contemporary Captured Tracks artists like DIIV and Wild Nothing. This shift proved influential, helping to bridge the gap between the 'emo revival' and the broader indie-pop landscape. Subsequent releases like Good Nature and Altogether saw the band incorporate elements of 70s soft rock, jazz fusion, and funk, demonstrating a restless desire for evolution. Critically, they are praised for their melodic consistency and the distinctive 'wet' guitar tones of Austin Getz and Casey Getz, which have become a benchmark for the genre.
