Trio Mandili

Bright, three-part Georgian polyphony anchored by the rhythmic pluck of a panduri. Pure, unadorned folk that feels like a sunny afternoon in the Caucasus mountains.

Intro

Trio Mandili offers a sound that is startlingly pure and deceptively simple. Built around the ancient tradition of Georgian polyphonic singing, their music consists almost entirely of three voices weaving together in tight, haunting, and often joyous harmonies. The only accompaniment is the panduri, a traditional three-stringed lute that provides a percussive, rhythmic backbone, making the songs feel as much like a heartbeat as a melody.

What makes them distinctive is the lack of artifice. Their rise to fame came through viral videos of the trio walking down rural dirt paths, singing directly into a handheld camera. This sense of movement and immediacy translates into their recordings; it is music that feels lived-in and communal rather than studio-bound. They possess a rare ability to make centuries-old folk traditions feel like a contemporary, spontaneous conversation.

For a first listen, start with their breakout track Apareka or the album Enguro. It is the perfect introduction to the way their voices lock together, creating a resonant wall of sound that is both earthy and ethereal. It is music for when you need to feel grounded, connected to the earth, and reminded of the power of the human voice.

Trio Mandili (მანდილი, "woman's headscarf") is a Georgian musical group which currently consists of Tatuli Mgeladze (თათული მგელაძე), Tako Tsiklauri (თაკო წიკლაური), and Mariam Kurasbediani (მარიამ ქურასბედიანი). They perform polyphonic singing accompanied by a panduri, a traditional Georgian string instrument. They became popular in Georgia when they uploaded a music video in which they performed a Georgian folk song, "Apareka". This video has gathered over eight million views. Trio Mandili have sung songs in other languages, such as the Hindi song "Goron Ki Na Kalon Ki Duniya Hai Dilwalon Ki" (English translation: Neither to whites nor to blacks the world belongs to the kindhearted) that was performed on India's Republic Day, as well as the Polish song "Lipka" (English translation: Little linden) and the Hebrew song "Adon Olam". Found on their YouTube channel, Trio Mandili has also recorded songs in Spanish, Italian, Ukrainian, and Russian. In 2017, the group participated in Evroviizis erovnul konkurss with the song "Me da shen" with the chance to represent Georgia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. They performed 10th and ultimately finished in 12th place with 65 points.
