Trash Kit

Angular, interlocking guitar lines meet jubilant polyphonic vocals. Post-punk that feels like a brightly colored geometric puzzle coming together in real time.

Intro

Trash Kit sounds like the precise moment a chaotic idea suddenly makes perfect sense. Their music is built on a foundation of interlocking parts: Rachel Aggs' signature guitar style, heavily influenced by West African highlife, creates a shimmering, melodic web that dances over Rachel Horwood's expressive and unconventional drum patterns. It is music that feels physically active, constantly moving and shifting, yet grounded by a raw, dry production that makes it feel like the band is playing three feet away from you.

What truly sets them apart is the vocal interplay. Rather than standard lead and backing roles, the voices in Trash Kit tangle and weave around one another, creating a polyphonic texture that is both cerebral and deeply celebratory. There is a specific kind of 'post-punk joy' here that avoids the genre's typical gloom in favor of a bright, restless energy. It is skeletal and minimalist, yet it feels incredibly full because every note and beat is essential.

Start with their 2019 album 'Horizon' to hear their most refined version of this sound. It captures the warmth of their chemistry while highlighting the intricate, danceable friction that makes them a cornerstone of the modern UK DIY scene. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves music that challenges the brain while moving the feet.

Trash Kit is a British post-punk trio formed in 2008 in London. Its members are Ray Aggs (guitar and vocals), Gill Partington (bass guitar), and Rachel Horwood (drums and vocals). Original bassist Ros Murray was previously of the band Electrelane. Ray Aggs also plays in Sacred Paws and Shopping, and Rachel Horwood in Bamboo and Bas Jan (the latter also featuring Serafina Steer). Gill Partington and Rachel Horwood also played together in Halo Halo.
