Tom Scott

Slick, high-fidelity saxophone grooves that bridge the gap between late-night jazz clubs and Hollywood soundstages. Sophisticated fusion with a relentless pocket.

Intro

Tom Scott's music is the definitive sound of the professional West Coast studio scene at its peak. It is characterized by a crystalline clarity and a rhythmic 'pocket' so deep it feels structural. His saxophone playing doesn't just lead the melody; it acts as a conversationalist, weaving through dense arrangements of electric piano, tight funk drumming, and warm analog bass lines. It is music that feels both expensive and effortless, capturing the transition from the experimental grit of early fusion to the polished heights of smooth jazz.

What sets Scott apart is his background as a master arranger and composer. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused solely on soloing, Scott treats every track like a miniature film score. There is a narrative arc to his instrumental compositions, often utilizing horn sections and synthesizers to create a wall of sound that remains remarkably nimble. His work is the connective tissue between the jazz tradition and the pop-rock sophistication of the 1970s and 80s.

Start with 'Blow It Out' to hear the quintessential fusion energy, or dive into his work on 'Street Beat' for a more urban, rhythmic experience. If you have ever enjoyed a Steely Dan bridge or a classic 70s film theme, you have likely already heard his influence; his solo work simply lets that signature saxophone voice take center stage.

Thomas Scott (born 1984 or 1985) is an English podcaster, presenter, YouTuber, and former web developer. On his self-titled YouTube channel, running from 2014 to 2024, Scott created educational videos across a range of topics including history, geography, linguistics, science, and technology. As of July 2025, his five YouTube channels have collectively gained over 8 million subscribers and 1.98 billion views. Born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, Scott first came to media attention as a student, creating a parody of a governmental website. He created his channel in 2006, but only began to enjoy mainstream popularity after 2014, when he began his education series "Things You Might Not Know". Scott produced and uploaded educational videos to the channel across a range of topics including linguistics, technology, geography, history, and science. His output has included series such as Language Files (which focuses on linguistics and languages), The Basics (computing and IT), Amazing Places (geographical locations), and Things You Might Not Know. Some of his videos have received external coverage, including colours unable to be recorded accurately on video, compact hovercraft, and how bear-resistant infrastructure is tested. Scott has also collaborated with other YouTubers, including his Tom Scott plus channel, several comedy series with The Technical Difficulties, and the brain-teaser podcast Lateral. After a decade of consistent weekly uploads, he broke from this schedule in January 2024, to focus instead on other projects.
