High-voltage guitar wizardry that turns feedback into a weapon. Aggressive riffs and political fire for when you need to feel invincible.
Tom Morello’s music sounds like a riot occurring inside a circuit board. It is defined by a singular approach to the electric guitar where the instrument is treated less like a lute and more like a turntable or a synthesizer. You will hear massive, funk-inflected riffs that anchor the track, suddenly interrupted by bird-chirp feedback, siren-like pitch shifts, and percussive toggle-switch stutters that defy traditional rock logic.
What makes him truly distinctive is the marriage of this high-tech sonic aggression with a deeply rooted folk sensibility. Whether he is playing a distorted anthem or a stripped-back acoustic ballad under his Nightwatchman moniker, the intent is always the same: agitation and education. His solo work often bridges the gap between the heavy alternative metal of his band years and a modern, electronic-tinged protest sound that feels both ancient and futuristic.
Start with the album 'Comandante' to hear the full breadth of his technical mastery and collaborative spirit. It serves as a perfect microcosm of his ability to weave together heavy rock, hip-hop influence, and experimental noise into something that demands your full attention and a bit of your adrenaline.

Between 2016 and 2019, Morello was a member of the supergroup Prophets of Rage. Morello was also a touring musician with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Under the moniker the Nightwatchman, Morello released his solo work. Together with Boots Riley, he formed Street Sweeper Social Club. Morello co-founded Axis of Justice, which airs a monthly program on Pacifica Radio station KPFK (90.7 FM) in Los Angeles. Born in Harlem, New York City and raised in Libertyville, Illinois, Morello became interested in music and politics while in high school. He attended Harvard University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Committee on Degrees in Social Studies. After his previous band Lock Up disbanded, Morello met Zack de la Rocha. The two founded Rage Against the Machine, going on to become one of the most popular and influential metal acts of the 1990s. He is best known for his unique and creative guitar playing style, which incorporates feedback noise, unconventional picking and tapping as well as heavy use of guitar effects. Morello is also known for his socialist political views and activism, creating the solo project The Nightwatchman as an outlet for those views while playing apolitical music with Audioslave. He was ranked number 18 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of greatest guitarists of all time. As a member of Rage Against the Machine, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.
