Tihuana emerged from the fertile São Paulo rock scene in 1999, quickly distinguishing themselves through a hybrid sound that integrated hardcore punk, rap rock, and Latin rhythms. Their debut album 'Ilegal' (2000) established them as a major force in the 'Novo Rock Brasileiro' movement, characterized by high energy and cross-genre experimentation.
The band's sound identity is anchored by lead singer Egypcio's gravelly, intense vocals and a rhythm section that favors heavy, driving grooves. They are most famous for the track 'Tropa de Elite', which became a massive cultural phenomenon after being featured in the 2007 film of the same name, though the song predated the movie by several years. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the playful irreverence of Raimundos and the more serious alternative rock of Detonautas. Their career arc shows a consistent dedication to live performance, culminating in a 25th-anniversary reunion tour in 2025.
