Three Mile Pilot

Three Mile Pilot (3MP) is a seminal fixture of the San Diego indie scene, serving as the creative nexus for what would become two of the region's most influential exports: Pinback and The Black Heart Procession. Formed in 1991, their sound identity is defined by a 'bottom-heavy' architecture, where Zach Smith's chordal, high-register bass playing functions as the lead instrument.

This is complemented by Pall Jenkins' idiosyncratic vocal style, which ranges from a vulnerable whisper to a strained, emotive wail. Their early work, such as 'Nà Vuccà Dò Lupù', was characterized by a raw, almost nautical aggression and a fascination with sci-fi lore (specifically the game Star Control). As they evolved, particularly on the landmark 'Another Desert, Another Sea', they incorporated piano and more complex arrangements, moving toward a cinematic 'dark-indie' aesthetic. Despite a brief brush with major label Geffen, the band maintained a fiercely independent trajectory, eventually finding a home on Touch and Go. They are critically regarded as 'musician's musicians,' cited for their innovative rhythmic structures and for pioneering a specific brand of moody, cerebral rock that eschews traditional verse-chorus-verse templates in favor of atmospheric tension.
