This Is a Process of a Still Life

This Is a Process of a Still Life (later known as Scriptures) is an instrumental collective originating from Missoula, Montana. Formed in 2003, the group carved out a niche within the post-rock and ambient scenes by prioritizing textural exploration over the genre's typical crescendo-based structures.

Their sound is characterized by a rich, multi-instrumental palette including Rhodes, Wurlitzer, organ, and multiple guitars, creating a 'painterly' aesthetic often compared to visual art. Their 2004 self-titled debut and the 2005 follow-up 'Light' established them as key figures in the second-wave post-rock movement, though they remained more experimental and less formulaic than many of their contemporaries. The band's move to Seattle and subsequent name change to Scriptures signaled a shift toward even more atmospheric, melodic territory. Critically, they are noted for their 'organic' feel and ability to evoke specific environmental moods, particularly those associated with the Pacific Northwest and the Rocky Mountains.
