The Yawpers

High-octane rock and roll played on overdriven acoustic guitars. It is gritty, literary, and loud, feeling like a punk band crashing a bluegrass festival.

Intro

The Yawpers sound like the American heartland catching fire. While they use acoustic guitars, do not expect a gentle folk session; they run those instruments through cranked amps until they howl like electric beasts. The percussion is heavy and driving, providing a muscular foundation for Nate Cook's gravelly, uninhibited vocal delivery that shifts from a melodic croon to a primal scream.

What truly sets them apart is the friction between their high-brow literary inspirations and their low-brow, beer-soaked execution. They take the spirit of Walt Whitman and drag it through the mud of a Delta blues joint and the chaos of a 1970s punk club. It is music that feels dangerous and earnest at the same time, capturing a sense of restless American wandering and existential grit.

Start with 'American Man' to hear their signature blend of blues-rock swagger and punk urgency. If you want something more conceptual and experimental, 'Boy in a Well' showcases their ability to weave complex narratives without sacrificing their raw, explosive energy. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone who likes their Americana with a heavy dose of distortion and attitude.

The Yawpers are a three-piece rock and roll band from Denver, Colorado. Their name is derived from a Walt Whitman poem, entitled "Song of Myself" from Leaves of Grass: "I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world." The Yawpers play in a unique setting of two acoustic guitar players and drummer, yet their music is played with "raucous glee comparable to seeing a metal band".
