The Wytches

Gritty, reverb-soaked garage rock that feels like a surf band playing at a seance. Dark, unruly, and deeply atmospheric psych for basement dwellers.

Intro

The Wytches sound like a surf-rock band that has been dragged through a swamp and left to dry in a haunted basement. There is a specific, oily grit to their sound, characterized by Kristian Bell’s signature guitar bends that wobble with a seasick intensity. It is music that feels perpetually on the verge of a breakdown, balancing melodic hooks with a feral, unhinged energy that owes as much to early grunge as it does to 60s psychedelia.

What truly sets them apart is the 'surf-sludge' aesthetic. While many garage bands aim for a clean retro vibe, The Wytches lean into the murk. The vocals are often delivered in a desperate, throat-shredding howl that cuts through a wall of cavernous reverb. Their lyrics are surreal and poetic, avoiding garage rock cliches in favor of abstract imagery that feels both intimate and slightly threatening.

Start with their debut, Annabel Dream Reader. It is the definitive document of their early 'doom-surf' sound, featuring tracks that swing violently between quiet, eerie tension and explosive, distorted release. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who likes their psychedelia with a heavy dose of shadows and sharp edges.

The Wytches are an English rock band formed in 2011 in Peterborough. Following their formation, the band were based in Brighton. The band currently consists of singer-songwriter Kristian Bell, bassist Daniel Rumsey, keyboardist/guitarist Mark Breed and drummer Bhavin Thaker. Drummer Gianni Honey left the band in 2019.
