The Upstairs

The Upstairs is a seminal Indonesian new wave band formed in 2001, credited with spearheading the 'Jakarta Movement' and reviving 80s-inspired aesthetics in the Southeast Asian independent scene. Led by the flamboyant Jimi Multhazam, the band's sound is a sophisticated blend of A Flock of Seagulls' melodicism, Joy Division's rhythmic tension, and Depeche Mode's electronic textures, all underpinned by aggressive, 'heavy' guitar lines.

Their early career was defined by a fierce DIY ethic, with their debut EP 'Antahberantah' becoming a word-of-mouth phenomenon before they transitioned to a major label with the landmark album 'Energy' in 2006. Critically, they are noted for their unconventional lyrical approach, eschewing traditional rhyme schemes for freeform narratives. They occupy a unique cultural position as bridge-builders between the underground punk/indie circuit and mainstream pop success in Indonesia, influencing a generation of 'Indische' and electronic-leaning acts.
