The Tossers

Gritty, mandolin-heavy punk that feels like a long night in a Chicago pub. Traditional Irish melodies played with a restless, working-class edge.

Intro

The Tossers sound like the exact moment a quiet drink turns into a rowdy wake. It is music built on the bones of traditional Irish folk, but it is played with the frantic, desperate energy of the Chicago punk scene. You can hear the wood of the mandolin and the breath in the tin whistle, but it is all anchored by a rhythm section that sounds like it is trying to outrun a storm. Tony Duggins' vocals are the centerpiece, delivered with a gravelly, lived-in rasp that makes every story feel like a personal confession shared over a pint.

What sets them apart is their refusal to lean into the cartoonish 'pub rock' tropes of their contemporaries. While other bands in the genre might go for polished anthems, The Tossers keep things dusty and dangerous. There is a genuine sense of melancholy and historical weight in their songwriting that mirrors the Pogues more than the Dropkick Murphys. They capture the specific tension of being an immigrant or a descendant in a hard-nosed American city, balancing pride with a deep, aching nostalgia.

Start with 'Agony' for a masterclass in how to blend acoustic textures with punk velocity. It captures the band at their most cohesive, offering both high-speed jigs and slower, more contemplative ballads. If you want to feel the sweat and the spirit of their community, 'Gloatin' and Showboatin'' provides the definitive live experience, recorded on their home turf during St. Patrick's Day.

The Tossers are an American six-piece Celtic punk band from Chicago, Illinois, United States, formed in July 1993. They have toured with Murphy's Law, Streetlight Manifesto, Catch 22, Dropkick Murphys, The Reverend Horton Heat, Flogging Molly, Street Dogs, Clutch, Sick of it All and Mastodon. They opened for The Pogues in New York City on St. Patrick's Day in 2007. The Tossers were honored to play the Kennedy Center in May 2016. The band pre-dates more well-known Celtic punk bands such as the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly, which formed in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Their latest album, entitled Smash the Windows, was released on March 3, 2017.
