Dripping with spring reverb and mid-century cool. Authentic, high-octane instrumental surf rock that feels like a vintage postcard from a California beach.
The Torquays offer a masterclass in the 'drip' and 'clang' of classic surf music. Their sound is defined by the heavy use of outboard spring reverb units and vintage Fender amplification, creating a shimmering, liquid guitar tone that feels both nostalgic and electrifying. It is music that prioritizes the physical sensation of the wave and the machine, eschewing vocals to let the melody lines act as the narrator.
What sets them apart is their obsessive commitment to the 1960s aesthetic. This isn't a modern reimagining; it is a preservation of the drive and excitement found in the original surf era. The rhythm section provides a tight, galloping foundation that allows the lead guitars to execute complex tremolo picking and melodic dives that echo the pioneers of the genre while maintaining a crisp, professional edge.
Start with 'A Date With the Torquays' to experience their ability to capture the quintessential California sound. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the high-energy, instrumental storytelling of the early sixties but wants the clarity of a well-engineered studio recording.
The Torquays were a popular instrumental surf band from Orange County from 1994 to 2008. The band was originally formed in 1964 by Jerry Gordon and Richard Harmer in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. After Gordon and Harmer moved to Southern California a few years later, the band went dormant until the film Pulp Fiction came out in 1994. Gordon then reformed the band to include: Duff Paulsen (drums), Don Parra (bass), Steve Soest (guitar) and Armin Brown (guitar) who would replace Gordon in the year 2000. The band recorded several critically acclaimed albums, toured the west coast, appeared on local radio and television and had a small part at the end of the Ron Mann directed film Tales of the Rat Fink (2006) about the life of Ed Roth.
