High-octane brass and sharp guitar upstrokes from the heart of NYC. Essential third-wave ska that keeps the room moving with blue-collar grit and infectious energy.
Formed in 1981 in New York City by British expatriate Robert 'Bucket' Hingley, The Toasters are widely credited as the architects of the American Third Wave of Ska. Emerging from the Lower East Side punk scene, they fused the 2-Tone aesthetic of bands like The Specials with a harder, NYC-centric edge.
Hingley also founded Moon Ska Records, which became the most influential label in the genre, launching the careers of dozens of bands and creating a self-sustaining ecosystem for ska in North America. Their sound is defined by a relentless work ethic and a 'power-5' or 'power-6' lineup that emphasizes a tight, aggressive horn section and 'skanking' guitar rhythms. Despite numerous lineup changes, the band's identity has remained remarkably consistent, characterized by a mix of social commentary and high-energy dance music. They are often cited as the 'Ramones of Ska' due to their longevity, stripped-back intensity, and massive influence on the ska-punk explosion of the late 1990s.
