The Third Eye Foundation

Murky, distorted breakbeats and ghostly guitar textures from the Bristol underground. Industrial-tinged jungle for dark rooms and restless nights.

Intro

The Third Eye Foundation sounds like the beautiful decay of a city. It is the sound of jungle and drum and bass stripped of its dancefloor utility and submerged in a bath of industrial noise, lo-fi hiss, and shoegaze guitar feedback. The rhythms are frantic and splintered, but they feel distant, as if you are hearing a club through several thick concrete walls while standing in a cold, damp alleyway.

What makes Matt Elliott's work distinctive is the sheer density of the atmosphere. While his contemporaries in the Bristol scene were leaning into smooth trip-hop or polished techstep, Elliott was building sonic puzzles out of 'unfriendly' noises and dreamy drones. It is music that feels haunted by its own samples, where every breakbeat is slightly frayed at the edges and every melody is buried under layers of tape saturation.

Start with 'Ghost' to hear the project at its most refined and eerie. If you prefer a rawer, more guitar-heavy approach that bridges the gap between indie rock and electronic music, 'Semtex' is an essential document of 90s experimentalism. It is perfect for those who find comfort in the darker, more abrasive corners of electronic music.

Matt Elliott is an English music producer, guitarist and singer-songwriter, originally from Bristol, England and now based in France. He produced and recorded electronic music as The Third Eye Foundation, before pivoting towards releasing folk music under his name.
