Hallucinatory collage-rock that dissolves pop melodies into a murky soup of samples, fuzz, and sudden shifts. A beautiful, disorienting fever dream for the digital age.
Listening to The Spirit of the Beehive feels like trying to tune into a radio station that doesn't quite exist. One moment you are floating in a warm bath of 60s psych-pop sunshine, and the next, the floor drops out into a basement filled with industrial noise and glitchy electronics. It is music that refuses to sit still, constantly mutating and shedding its skin just as you start to get comfortable with a melody.
What makes them truly distinctive is their mastery of the 'collage' aesthetic. They don't just write songs; they construct sonic environments where found sounds, tape loops, and sudden tempo changes are as important as the guitar riffs. There is a profound sense of 'wrongness' that is deeply intentional, a digital-age psychedelia that captures the anxiety and fragmented attention of modern life through beautiful, broken textures.
Start with 'Hypnic Jerks' for a perfect introduction to their shapeshifting pop sensibilities. If you want to see how far down the rabbit hole they can go, 'ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH' offers a more aggressive, electronic-leaning dive into their chaotic and rewarding world.
