Formed in Coventry in 1979, The Selecter were foundational architects of the 2 Tone movement, a culturally significant multi-racial ska revival that merged Jamaican rhythms with British punk attitude. Led by the iconic Pauline Black, one of the few prominent female voices in the scene, the band provided a sophisticated, often brooder alternative to the more cartoonish elements of the ska revival.
Their sound is characterized by Neol Davies' sharp guitar work and a tight, soulful horn section. Career-wise, their debut 'Too Much Pressure' remains a definitive document of the era, while the follow-up 'Celebrate the Bullet' showcased a shift toward more melodic, new wave-adjacent songwriting. Despite various lineup changes and hiatuses, the band has maintained a consistent critical reputation for their uncompromising political stance and technical proficiency. They influenced a generation of third-wave ska and punk-rock bands, bridging the gap between traditional Caribbean music and modern Western rock.
