Bright, punchy indie rock that filters 1950s prom-night nostalgia through a modern New York lens. High-energy guitar pop for sunny days and city nights.
The Postelles sound like a vintage Polaroid of a New York street corner, capturing a specific blend of retro charm and modern urgency. Their music is built on a foundation of clean, interlocking guitar riffs and a rhythm section that favors the bouncy, propulsive shuffles of early rock and roll and Motown. It is unapologetically bright, trading the typical indie rock scowl for a wide-eyed, melodic exuberance that feels both timeless and perfectly suited for the 2010s guitar-pop revival.
What distinguishes them is their commitment to the 'unadorned rock song.' While many of their contemporaries leaned into heavy synthesizers or murky production, The Postelles kept things crisp and transparent. You can hear the influence of their producer, Albert Hammond Jr., in the way the guitars are prioritized, but they soften that Strokes-style grit with vocal harmonies that lean toward Buddy Holly or The Beatles. It is music that celebrates the hook above all else, delivered with a polished, professional sheen that never feels artificial.
Start with their self-titled debut for a masterclass in modern power-pop. It is an album that feels like a summer vacation, packed with three-minute gems that are impossible not to hum along to. If you want something with a bit more sonic variety and a slightly broader palette, '...And It Shook Me' shows the band maturing without losing the infectious energy that defined their early Manhattan school days.
The Postelles are four-piece rock band hailing from New York City. They formed at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The band released their debut album, The Postelles, on June 7, 2011. It was produced by Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes. The album was recorded at Quad Studios and Looking Glass Studios both in New York, and mixed by John O'Mahony in the Electric Lady Studios. The album was nominated for Best Rock/Hard Rock album in the Independent Music Awards. The band has played at Bonnaroo Music Festival, Lollapalooza, and Iceland Airwaves. They have toured with Kings of Leon, The Kooks, Vampire Weekend, Fun., Interpol and The Kills. Their second album, ...And It Shook Me was released on April 23, 2013. Allmusic journalist Stephen Thomas Erlewine called the album "a lively, bright collection of sharp pop" and says "what impresses isn't the hooks themselves but how the Postelles craft the riffs and melodies into songs, how they retain a brightness to their punch without ever seeming saccharine, how they seem to celebrate exuberance, not detachment."
