The Mummies

Blown-out, budget-rock chaos recorded on thrift-store gear. Raw garage punk with a snotty attitude and a Farfisa organ pushed to the breaking point.

Intro

The Mummies sound like a rock and roll band that was buried alive in 1964 and dug up in a San Francisco basement twenty years later. Their sound is defined by 'budget rock,' a self-imposed philosophy of using the cheapest, most battered equipment possible to create a sonic wall of distortion. It is fast, messy, and gloriously unrefined, featuring buzzing guitars and an organ that sounds like it is screaming for mercy.

What truly sets them apart is their total commitment to the bit. Beyond the bandages, they brought a genuine hostility to the polish of the music industry, famously refusing to release CDs for years and recording everything live to tape with no overdubs. The result is a tactile, gritty experience where you can practically hear the dust on the needles and the tubes in the amps glowing red.

Start with 'Death by Unga Bunga!!' for a comprehensive look at their high-velocity anthems. It captures the essence of their 'don't give a damn' energy and serves as the perfect entry point into the world of bands who value volume and attitude over technical perfection.

The Mummies are an American garage punk band formed in San Bruno, California, in 1988. Exhibiting a defiantly raw and lo-fi sound, they dubbed "budget rock", the Mummies' rebellious attitude and distinctive performance costumes exerted a major influence on later emerging garage punk and garage rock revival acts. Their recorded output was intentionally completed with poor, cheap equipment, including their first and only studio album Never Been Caught, which was released after the group's initial break-up. Since then, the Mummies have engaged in several positively-received reunion concerts and tours, including appearances in Europe and the US sporadically through to recent years. In 2020, the band announced that they had been working on a movie directed by independent filmmaker, Jim Garanto and written by the band.
