The Jezabels

Dramatic, piano-led indie rock with soaring operatic vocals. Intense, cinematic songs that build into massive, reverb-drenched crescendos for late-night catharsis.

Intro

The Jezabels occupy a space that feels both deeply intimate and massive enough to fill an arena. Their sound is anchored by a unique interplay between Heather Shannon's classically-influenced piano and Hayley Mary's powerhouse vocals, which can shift from a vulnerable whisper to a glass-shattering belt in a single breath. It is music that feels like it was written in the middle of a storm, full of tension and release.

What truly sets them apart is the 'intestindie' blend: a sophisticated mix of gothic drama, 80s pop sensibilities, and complex rhythmic structures. While many indie bands lean into a lo-fi or casual aesthetic, The Jezabels embrace the theatrical and the grand. The guitars are often textural and shimmering, acting more like a wash of color than a traditional lead instrument, while the drums provide a restless, driving energy.

Start with the 'Dark Storm' EP or their debut album 'Prisoner' to experience their peak dramatic era. These tracks perfectly capture the band's ability to turn personal introspection into widescreen, cinematic anthems that demand your full attention.

The Jezabels are an Australian indie rock band formed in Sydney in 2007. It consists of lead vocalist Hayley Mary, guitarist Sam Lockwood, pianist and keyboardist Heather Shannon, and drummer and percussionist Nik Kaloper. From 2009 to 2010, the group released three EPs, The Man Is Dead, She's So Hard, and Dark Storm—all produced and engineered by Lachlan Mitchell. Two of their releases have reached the ARIA Singles Chart Top 40: the Dark Storm EP (October 2010) and the single "Endless Summer" (August 2011). They released their debut studio album, Prisoner, in September 2011. It peaked at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart and won Best Independent Release at the ARIA Music Awards of 2012. Their second album, The Brink, came out in January 2014. Synthia, their third record, was issued in February 2016. The band went on indefinite hiatus in December 2017 and reunited for a concert tour in 2022.
