The Guild

High-gloss synth-pop and theatrical anthems celebrating gaming culture. Witty, character-driven songs for the chronically online and the proudly geeky.

Intro

The Guild sounds like a technicolor collision between a Broadway stage and a high-end gaming rig. The music is characterized by shimmering digital synths, punchy electronic drums, and a polished pop sheen that mirrors the early 2010s dance-pop charts. However, beneath the radio-ready production lies a sharp, satirical edge that specifically targets the nuances of MMORPG culture, social anxiety, and digital identity.

What makes the project distinctive is the commitment to character. These aren't just funny songs; they are extensions of a narrative universe where the stakes of a virtual world are treated with the grandiosity of a rock opera. Felicia Day's vocal performances balance genuine pop sensibility with theatrical flair, often utilizing multi-tracked harmonies and rapid-fire lyrical delivery to convey the frantic energy of internet life.

Newcomers should start with '(Do You Wanna Date My) Avatar,' the definitive anthem of the project. It perfectly encapsulates the blend of seductive synth-pop tropes and hyper-specific gaming jargon. From there, 'Game On' offers a more aggressive, Bollywood-influenced energy, while '(I'm the One That's) Cool' serves as a defiant, mid-tempo empowerment track for the nerd community.

The Guild is an American comedy web series created and written by Felicia Day, who also stars as Cyd Sherman (AKA Codex). It premiered on July 27, 2007, and ran until 2013. The show revolves around the lives of a gamers' online guild, The Knights of Good, who play countless hours of a fantasy MMORPG video game referred to as The Game. The story focuses on Codex, the guild's Priestess, who attempts to lead a normal life after one of her guild-mates, warlock Zaboo (Sandeep Parikh), shows up on her doorstep. During The Guild's first season episodes were uploaded to YouTube and the series website. After the first season, The Guild entered a partnership with Microsoft, and episodes of the second through fifth seasons premiered on Xbox Live Marketplace, Zune Marketplace, and MSN Video before being later made available on the official Guild website, YouTube, and iTunes. According to Day, Microsoft's business model changed after season five; Day wanted to keep ownership, so the episode premieres moved to Day's YouTube channel Geek & Sundry. The series is also available via DVD and streaming on Apple TV. In 2013, after the end of the sixth season, Day confirmed that the web series is complete. Since its release, The Guild has received several accolades, including six Streamy Awards and four IAWTV Awards.
