The Godfathers

Sharp-dressed rock and roll with a cynical edge. Gritty guitars and working-class anthems that bridge the gap between 70s punk grit and 90s Britpop swagger.

Intro

Formed in London in 1985 by brothers Peter and Chris Coyne, The Godfathers emerged from the ashes of The Sid Presley Experience to become a vital force in the UK alternative scene. Their sound was a deliberate reaction against the polished, synth-driven pop of the mid-80s, instead drawing from the raw energy of 1960s R&B, the aggression of 1977 punk, and the dark textures of post-punk.

Their visual identity, characterized by sharp suits and a 'mobster' persona, reinforced their image as a tight-knit, uncompromising unit. Their 1988 album 'Birth, School, Work, Death' remains their definitive statement, earning significant college radio play in the US and influencing the trajectory of guitar-based rock leading into the Britpop era. Critically, they are viewed as a 'bridge' band that maintained the integrity of pub rock and punk during a decade of artifice. Their influence can be heard in the more aggressive side of the 90s indie rock explosion, and they remain a highly respected live act known for their 'incendiary' performances.
