Polished Australian rock that balances post-hardcore urgency with cinematic piano and soaring, emotive vocals. Perfect for late-night drives and cathartic reflection.
The Getaway Plan occupies a unique space in the Australian rock landscape, blending the raw emotionality of mid-2000s post-hardcore with a sophisticated, almost cinematic sense of melody. Their sound is defined by Matthew Wright's incredible vocal range, which can shift from a vulnerable, breathy whisper to a powerful, glass-shattering belt in a single measure. The instrumentation is equally dynamic, often featuring lush piano textures that ground their more aggressive guitar-driven moments.
What truly distinguishes them is their evolution from a high-energy scene band into a more atmospheric, art-rock influenced outfit. While their early work crackles with youthful angst and rapid-fire riffs, their later material embraces longer song structures, ambient textures, and a more contemplative lyrical approach. It is music that feels deeply rooted in the urban sprawl of Melbourne, capturing a specific sense of nocturnal isolation and suburban yearning.
For those new to the band, the 2008 classic 'Other Voices, Other Rooms' is the essential starting point. It contains their biggest hits and perfectly encapsulates the 'big' sound that made them a staple of the Australian alternative scene. From there, move to 'Dark Horses' to hear how they matured into a more independent, textured, and experimental rock force.
