The Flirts

High-octane synth-pop with relentless drum machines and breathy girl-group vocals. The definitive sound of 1980s neon-lit dancefloors and late-night energy.

Intro

The Flirts represent the peak of Bobby Orlando's Hi-NRG vision: a relentless, synthetic pulse that feels like a caffeinated heartbeat. It is music built for movement, characterized by driving cowbells, aggressive synth basslines, and a revolving door of vocalists who deliver lines with a mix of breathy innocence and streetwise attitude. The sound is unashamedly artificial, celebrating the plastic sheen of the early 80s club scene.

What makes them distinctive is the 'Bobby O' production signature. Unlike the smoother disco that preceded it, this music is jagged and urgent. The percussion is pushed to the front of the mix, creating a mechanical, almost industrial drive that is softened only by the melodic, multi-layered female harmonies. It is the missing link between the disco era and the rise of modern electronic dance music, stripped of organic instruments in favor of pure sequencer power.

Start with 'Passion' or 'Danger' to hear the blueprint for the Hi-NRG genre. These tracks capture the essence of the project: high-speed tempos, catchy hooks, and a sense of nocturnal drama. It is the perfect starting point for anyone looking to understand the DNA of 80s synth-pop and the foundation of the Pet Shop Boys' early sound.

The Flirts are a project concept group formed by Bobby "O" Orlando, his performances as an artist, musician and songwriter. The group consisted of Orlando and featured a revolving roster of female session singers and models. Under The Flirts name, Orlando churned out hits "Passion", "Danger", "Helpless" and "Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime)". While many of the girls were just models for the group, Andrea Del Conte, Rebecca Sullivan, Debra Gaynor, Tricia Wygal, and Christina Criscione used their real vocals. Today, the group features a relatively stable trio that performs at 80s music festivals and other venues mainly in the U.S. with some international appearances.
