The Faceless

The Faceless, led by mastermind Michael Keene, redefined technical death metal in the mid-2000s by injecting a sense of melody and space-age atmosphere into a genre often criticized for being purely athletic. Emerging from the Los Angeles scene, they bridged the gap between the raw intensity of Necrophagist and the progressive leanings of Opeth.

Their sophomore effort, 'Planetary Duality', is widely considered a landmark of the genre, influencing a generation of 'bedroom' shredders and technical bands like Fallujah and The Zenith Passage. The band's evolution saw them move from the deathcore-tinged 'Akeldama' to the avant-garde, almost industrial 'In Becoming a Ghost'. Despite a rotating lineup, Keene's production style - characterized by digital clarity, heavy use of vocoders, and surgical guitar tones - remains the constant.
