Wry, hyper-literate folk that feels like a shared secret between two old friends. Intimate acoustic storytelling for the observant and the over-analytical.
Listening to The Extra Lens is like sitting in the back of a quiet bar with two of the smartest people you know while they trade stories about people you'll never meet. The music is anchored by the unmistakable, urgent delivery of John Darnielle and the sophisticated, melodic sensibilities of Franklin Bruno. It is a project defined by its lyrical density and the way it elevates small, mundane moments into something approaching the cinematic or the sacred.
What sets them apart is the specific chemistry between the two songwriters. While Darnielle brings the raw emotional intensity familiar to Mountain Goats fans, Bruno provides a stabilizing, often more musically complex framework that pulls the songs toward a more structured, almost chamber-folk elegance. The production is consistently dry and intimate, placing the listener right in the room with the vibrating guitar strings and the precise enunciation of every syllable.
Start with 'Undercard' to hear the project at its most polished and realized. It captures the duo's ability to blend haunting narratives with catchy, understated melodies. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who appreciates songwriting that rewards close attention and multiple listens.
The Extra Lens, formerly known as The Extra Glenns, is a band made up of Franklin Bruno (of Nothing Painted Blue and The Human Hearts) and John Darnielle (of the Mountain Goats). The band acts as a side project for both artists, and stayed underground throughout the 1990s, recording tracks for singles and some compilations. Both artists primarily concentrate on their own solo work, though as their popularity has grown, they have continued to work together. In the early 2000s, the duo decided to keep the project going, and in 2002 Absolutely Kosher Records released Martial Arts Weekend, their first full-length album. In August 2010, it was announced that The Extra Glenns had signed to Merge Records and changed their name to The Extra Lens. The new album, Undercard, was released on October 19, 2010. SPIN Magazine gave the record 7 out of 10 stars, calling it "vivid" and "haunting."
