Lush, atmospheric art rock that balances midwestern earnestness with British-influenced sonic experimentation. Perfect for late-night drives and quiet introspection.
The Envy Corps sound like the intersection of a sprawling Iowa landscape and a rain-slicked London street. Their music is built on a foundation of intricate, often syncopated rhythms and Luke Pettipoole’s soaring, elastic falsetto. It is rock music that feels deeply cinematic, moving from intimate, whispered verses to grand, shimmering crescendos that never feel unearned.
What truly sets them apart is their evolution from the 'quasi-anthems' of their major label debut toward a more experimental, textured approach inspired by the likes of Talk Talk and Portishead. They use the studio as an instrument, layering warm analog synths and delay-soaked guitars to create a sense of 'fog' that is both comforting and slightly eerie. There is a restless intelligence in their arrangements that rewards close listening.
Start with 'It Culls You' to hear the band at their creative peak, where their pop sensibilities perfectly collide with their art-rock ambitions. If you prefer something more immediate and melodic, their debut 'Dwell' offers a more polished, guitar-driven entry point into their world.
The Envy Corps was an American alternative rock band originally from Ames, Iowa. Discovered on Myspace by Universal Music imprint Vertigo, the band was transplanted into the UK indie dance/rock scene of the late 2000s. Future independent releases found the band experimenting with sounds inspired by Radiohead, Talk Talk, Portishead, and Bjork in relative obscurity outside their home state of Iowa. In a review of their critically acclaimed 2011 release It Culls You, Christina Smart of Examiner.com called the Envy Corps "the best band you've never heard of."
