The Dopamines

Gritty, high-speed Midwestern punk with raspy dual vocals and self-aware lyrics. It is loud, melodic, and feels like a long night at a dive bar with your best friends.

Intro

The Dopamines sound like the exact moment a house party turns into a riot. Their music is built on a foundation of classic 90s Lookout! Records pop punk, but it is stripped of any polished artifice and replaced with a thick layer of Midwestern grit. The guitars are loud and distorted, the drums never stop galloping, and the vocals trade off between melodic hooks and raspy, gravel-throated shouts that feel earned rather than performed.

What truly sets them apart is the tension between their upbeat, pogo-ready tempos and their deeply cynical, often self-loathing lyrical content. They write anthems for people who are tired of anthems, focusing on the messy realities of aging, substance use, and the existential dread of the everyman. It is music that manages to be incredibly catchy while sounding like it was recorded in a basement filled with empty cans and broken equipment.

For the uninitiated, Expect the Worst is the definitive starting point. It captures the band at their most cohesive, blending high-energy punk rock with a sense of urgency that makes every two-minute track feel like a life-or-death mission. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone who likes their pop punk with more scar tissue than sugar.

The Dopamines are an American punk rock band originating from Cincinnati, Ohio, formed in late 2006 by Matt Hemingway (drums), Jon Lewis (guitar, vocals) and Jon Weiner (bass, vocals). In 2008, Hemingway left the band and was replaced by Michael Dickson. Their loud style of punk has been compared to Midwestern punk bands like Dillinger Four. Occasionally, the band had toured with a second guitarist, including Mikey Erg from The Ergs! Since 2013, Josh Goldman has been the band's second guitarist.
