Fluid slide guitar that mimics the human voice. A masterfully organic blend of Southern blues, jazz exploration, and global rhythms for open-road listening.
The Derek Trucks Band sounds like a humid Georgia evening where the local blues joint suddenly opens a portal to North India. At the center is Trucks' slide guitar, which doesn't just play notes; it cries, sighs, and sings with a vocal-like fluidity that feels more like a living organism than a piece of wood and wire. The rhythm section provides a thick, swampy foundation that allows for expansive, jazz-inflected detours without ever losing the groove.
What truly distinguishes this group is their refusal to stay within the 'jam band' box. While they possess the improvisational chops to stretch a song for twenty minutes, they do so using the vocabulary of qawwali, afrobeat, and Coltrane-era jazz. The interplay between the Hammond B3 organ and the slide guitar creates a rich, amber-hued texture that feels both ancient and entirely fresh, grounded by Mike Mattison's gritty, soulful vocal delivery.
Start with 'Already Free' to hear their most polished songwriting and Grammy-winning production. For those who want to hear the band's true improvisational power, 'Songlines' captures the moment where their world-music influences and Southern rock roots fused into something singular and transcendent.
The Derek Trucks Band is an American musical group from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 1994 by guitarist Derek Trucks and bassist Todd Smallie. Best known for Trucks' distinctive slide guitar style, the band's diverse sound blends blues, rock, and jazz with more exotic influences such as qawwali, afrobeat, and Hindustani classical music. Their lineup has rotated over the years, with Trucks and Smallie as constants; other longtime members include drummer Yonrico Scott, keyboardist Kofi Burbridge, and lead vocalist Mike Mattison. The band has released six studio albums, the last of which, Already Free (2009), won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. The Derek Trucks Band has been on hiatus since 2010, when Trucks, Mattison, and Burbridge joined Trucks' wife, singer and guitarist Susan Tedeschi, to form the Tedeschi Trucks Band.
