Intro

The Connells occupy that evocative space between the jangly optimism of 60s pop and the introspective weight of 80s college rock. Their sound is defined by clean, interlocking guitar lines that chime with a silver-toned clarity, underpinned by a rhythm section that feels both sturdy and polite. It is music that feels deeply rooted in place, specifically the humid, academic, and slightly haunted atmosphere of the American Southeast.

What truly distinguishes them is a persistent sense of yearning. While their peers in the power-pop world often leaned into sugary hooks, The Connells always maintained a minor-key gravity. Doug MacMillan’s vocals possess a plainspoken, unpretentious quality that makes the band’s more poetic or historical lyrical turns feel accessible and lived-in. They are masters of the mid-tempo anthem, creating songs that feel like they have always existed in the back of your mind.

Start with 'Boylan Heights' to hear them at their most quintessential, or 'Ring' for the polished songwriting that led to their massive European success. It is the ideal soundtrack for moments of transition, whether you are physically traveling or simply reflecting on the distance between who you were and who you have become.

The Connells are an American musical group from Raleigh, North Carolina. They play a guitar-oriented, melodic, jangle-pop style of rock music with introspective lyrics that often reflect the history or culture of the American South. Though the band has released little content since 2001, they have never officially broken up and continue to occasionally perform to the present. In the United States, the Connells had three top 10 hits on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, but they are best known for their song "'74–'75", which was a number one hit in Norway and Sweden in 1995 while reaching the top 10 in a total of 11 European countries.
