Bittersweet 90s-tinged rock with breathy vocals and lush, melancholic guitars. Perfect for rainy afternoons and quiet, introspective city walks.
The Brilliant Green sounds like the intersection of a rainy Tokyo afternoon and a 1990s London record shop. Their music is defined by a heavy, melodic guitar presence that feels both grounded and ethereal, anchored by Tomoko Kawase's distinctive, breathy vocal delivery. There is a persistent sense of 'mono no aware' - the beauty in the transience of things - running through their arrangements, even when the tempo picks up.
What truly sets them apart is their seamless integration of Western Britpop and psychedelic influences with a uniquely Japanese melodic sensibility. While many of their peers leaned into high-energy J-pop, 'Buriguri' maintained a cooler, more detached aesthetic. The interplay between Shunsaku Okuda's meticulously crafted 60s-inspired rock foundations and Kawase's often melancholic, bilingual lyrics creates a sound that feels timeless rather than dated.
Newcomers should start with their self-titled debut for the quintessential 90s experience, or dive into 'Ash Like Snow' for a heavier, more modern alternative rock edge. It is music for the moments when you want to feel the weight of your own thoughts without being crushed by them.
