The Arcs are a collaborative supergroup formed in 2015 by Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) and Leon Michels (El Michels Affair). The project serves as a creative outlet for Auerbach to explore 'extra weird' sonic territories beyond the blues-rock confines of his primary band.
The lineup features a core of highly respected session musicians and producers, including Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss, and the late Richard Swift, whose idiosyncratic production style heavily influenced the band's aesthetic. Their sound is a sophisticated blend of garage rock, psychedelic soul, and 1960s pop, characterized by heavy tape saturation, vintage keyboard textures, and a rhythmic sensibility informed by hip-hop and classic R&B. Critically, they are praised for their 'freewheeling' studio approach, often recording entire albums in short, intense bursts. The death of Richard Swift in 2018 left a significant void, but the band returned in 2023 with 'Electrophonic Chronic,' a tribute to their fallen member that solidified their status as masters of the modern-vintage sound.
