Intro

The Aqua Velvets sound like a surf band that stayed at the beach long after the sun went down and the fog rolled in. While they utilize the classic tools of the genre, like Fender Jaguars and heavy spring reverb, their music is far more interested in atmosphere than athleticism. It is liquid, shimmering, and deeply evocative, moving with the slow, rhythmic pulse of the tide rather than the frantic energy of a 1960s beach party.

What truly sets them apart is their cinematic ambition. By incorporating horns, strings, and exotica-inspired percussion, they bridge the gap between Dick Dale and Ennio Morricone. There is a distinct 'noir' quality to their melodies, often leaning into minor keys and haunting arrangements that suggest a mystery unfolding in a tiki lounge or a desert outpost. It is surf rock for the sophisticated listener, prioritizing texture and mood over retro kitsch.

Start with 'Guitar Noir' to hear the band at their most atmospheric and refined. It perfectly captures their ability to make a guitar sound like a voice narrating a film that hasn't been made yet. From there, explore 'Surfmania' for a slightly more traditional but no less lush take on the genre's revival.

Aqua Velvets are an American surf rock revival band from San Francisco, California, formed in the 1980s by guitarist Miles Corbin. Rather than simply recreate the vintage 1963 surf sound, Corbin set out to add depth and dimension with original songs that included strings, horns, keyboards, and exotic instruments. The result was a cinematic sound more akin to film composers like Ennio Morricone and John Barry. The group released their debut album in 1992, recorded over a period of several years. This album was recorded in the auto repair shop where bassist Michael Lindner worked. They signed to Atlantic Records in 1995 to release Surfmania; subsequent releases appeared on BMG subsidiary Milan Records. The Velvets continued to release a steady stream of albums through 2015, most notably Tiki Beat (2010) and El Morocco (2015). The Aqua Velvets' songs have been covered by a number of other surf artists. The group performs live mostly on the West Coast.
