Lush, liquid soul that floats between jazz improvisation and electronic precision. Warm Rhodes chords and intricate beatbox rhythms for a perfect sunrise.
Taylor McFerrin creates music that feels like a physical space, specifically a sun-drenched apartment in the early morning. It is a delicate, highly textured blend of neo-soul, jazz, and electronic production that prioritizes atmosphere over aggression. The sound is anchored by his signature use of the Fender Rhodes, creating a shimmering, liquid foundation that feels both nostalgic and futuristic. It is the sound of someone meticulously building a world out of breath and electricity.
What truly sets him apart is his background as a beatboxer, which informs his rhythmic sensibility. Unlike standard electronic producers, his beats often feel organic and slightly off-kilter, mimicking the nuances of human breath and movement. His vocal arrangements are equally distinctive, often using his own voice or guest features as melodic textures rather than traditional lead performances. This creates a sense of weightlessness, as if the songs are drifting through the air rather than being tethered to a stage.
Start with the album 'Early Riser'. It is a masterclass in collaborative jazz-fusion, featuring heavyweights like Thundercat and Robert Glasper, yet it remains distinctly Taylor's vision. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the Brainfeeder aesthetic but wants something more melodic, gentle, and soul-stirring.
